The "VW Saga"

It all began in 1951, the year Isaac graduated from college.  He and several colleagues had gathered for the regular Thursday Campus Christian Fellowship meeting at the Old South Church in Copley Square. One of their class members drove up in this strange-looking vehicle that not one of those assembled there had ever seen before.  Today, everyone certainly knows what a VW Beetle looks like, so no need to describe it here.  Needless to say it caused quite a stir that evening in ’51.  Isaac recalls his amazement when someone raised the hood to find there was NO engine.  This indeed was the first car we had seen with rear-engine drive.

From then on, Isaac decided he would some day own a “Beetle”.  It wasn’t until 1973 that he was able to get enough money together to buy a BRAND-New “Baby Blue” ’73 Super Beetle with a racing stripe right from the front bumper over the top to the rear bumper.  It was his pride and joy.  He drove it to work every day and loving every minute.  One day, on Route 2 in Acton, he had stopped at a red light, and looked in the rear view mirror only to see a car approaching fairly fast.  Much to his amazement it didn’t appear that it was going to stop.  AND IT DIDN’T!  Smashing directly into the rear of Isaac’s VW it destroyed the entire rear section and left Isaac helpless in the middle of the road.  The driver of the reckless vehicle explained that she had lost her brakes and had no way to stop the car except to run into the car in front of her.  This was little consolation to Isaac who now saw his beloved Beetle a total wreck.  Isaac’s garage mechanic told him “NOT WORTH REPAIRING,” so off it went to the junk yard where it eventually was crushed to a flattened pancake and disappeared into the sunset and probably melted down.

Despair was not long lived however, because Isaac decided some day he would again own a Beetle.  Just last September 2003, he finally found a vintage 1974 Standard VW Beetle which had been completely restored, so it now sits in his garage awaiting some last-minute repairs and a tune-up and he’ll be on the road this summer once again driving a car he always loved.  True to any earnest VW owner he has joined the New Hampshire VW club and plans to go to as many rallies, or shows, he can during the summer season.
